SRINAGAR: The Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Jammu, has asked residents of the Jammu Division who own motor vehicles registered in other States or Union Territories to get their vehicles re-registered within a prescribed time limit.

In a public notice, the RTO said it has been observed that a large number of commercial and non-commercial vehicles with registrations from outside Jammu and Kashmir are being continuously kept and operated in the Jammu Division beyond the permitted period without obtaining a new registration mark, in violation of Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The notice said that any vehicle kept in another State or Union Territory for more than 12 months is required to be re-registered with the local registering authority. Failure to do so, it added, affects proper regulation, vehicle identification and enforcement, and may also pose risks to public safety, law and order and internal security.

Vehicle owners concerned have been directed to apply for the assignment of new registration numbers within 15 days from the date of issuance of the notice. The RTO warned that vehicles found violating the provisions after the deadline would be liable to seizure, detention, penalties and other legal action under the Motor Vehicles Act and relevant rules, without further notice.

The notice said the directions have been issued in the interest of public safety, internal security and effective enforcement of motor vehicle laws in the Jammu Division.
