SRINAGAR: On the occasion of International Press Freedom Day, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) leaders underscored the importance of a free and independent press, while paying tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.
NC Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq extended appreciation to journalists and members of the media fraternity for their commitment to truth and public service. In a statement, he lauded the resilience of journalists in Kashmir who continue to work under challenging conditions, playing a key role in informing citizens and ensuring institutional accountability.
He said a free, responsible and vibrant press remains the cornerstone of a healthy democracy. Sadiq also paid tribute to media personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, acknowledging their courage and sacrifice.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he stated that the Omar Abdullah-led government is working towards creating an environment where media professionals can operate with freedom, security and dignity. He stressed the need to ensure that journalists can function without fear or undue constraints.
Earlier, NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah also highlighted the significance of press freedom in a democratic society. In his message, he said a free press is essential to informing citizens and ensuring accountability.
“No society can hope to reap the benefits of democracy without guaranteeing its press fraternity the freedom and dignity it deserves. The local press, particularly in Kashmir, continues to work under tremendous pressure,” he said.
Dr Farooq praised the resilience of journalists in the region, describing their efforts to uphold people’s rights as commendable. He also paid homage to journalists who made the ultimate sacrifice while performing their duties.
He further emphasised that freedom of thought is intrinsically linked to the right to free speech and a free press, while underlining the media’s responsibility to uphold professional standards and dignity.
