Police detain 3 drug peddlers under PIT-NDPS Act in Kupwara

Kupwara, Jul 15: Police in Kupwara on Tuesday detained three drug peddlers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act.

A senior Police officer told Greater Kashmir that the trio was found consistently involved in drug peddling and had been continuously indulging in luring local youth towards drugs.

“A dossier under the NDPS Act was prepared against them, following which a warrant was issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, subsequently, the trio was detained,” he said. He said that several FIRs had been lodged against them in past, and based upon their continuous involvement in drug peddling, the dossier was prepared henceforth. “Following the execution of the warrant, the accused have been lodged at various jails across J&K,” he said. Meanwhile, Police in a statement said, “Three drug peddlers were detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act. The detention orders were issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, following in-depth investigations and recommendations made by the district police.”

“The detained individuals have been identified as Zaheer Khawaja of Karnah, who was booked in FIR No 38/2022 under Section 8/21 NDPS Act; Zahoor Ahmad Malik of Kalaroos, Kupwara, linked to FIR No 10/2025 under Section 8/21 NDPS Act; and Irshad Ahmad of Halmatpora, Kupwara, who is involved in FIR Nos 255/2023 and 09/2025 under Sections 8/21 and 29 of the NDPS Act,” the statement said.
