Ganderbal, May 13: An oil tanker overturned on the Srinagar–Leh Highway Bypass in the Watlar area of Ganderbal district on Wednesday morning, leading to a major oil spill and prompting a large-scale emergency response.

News agency KNC reported officials as saying that the tanker, bearing registration number PB02FB2307, reportedly lost control near the Watlar Bypass before turning turtle along the roadside.

According to officials, the driver escaped from the scene soon after the accident.

The incident caused a substantial oil spill on the highway, prompting concerns over commuter safety and disruption to traffic movement on the busy arterial route.

Soon after the mishap, teams from Fire and Emergency Services, assisted by other concerned departments, reached the spot and launched operations to contain the spill, secure the area and prevent any further hazard.

Authorities said efforts were underway to clear the affected stretch and regulate vehicular movement to ensure smooth passage of traffic.
