SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday chaired the 7th meeting of the Wildlife Board for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir at Lok Bhavan, where the Board approved a key road project through the Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Board accorded approval for the construction of the Asha–Cheema–Gurdaligali–Aphrawat–Sarson–Anita Road within the sanctuary area in Baramulla district. The proposal will now be forwarded to the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife for final wildlife clearance.

Emphasising sustainable development, Manoj Sinha stressed the need to strike a balance between infrastructure growth and ecological preservation, highlighting the importance of protecting the Union Territory’s unique biodiversity.

The meeting was attended by Javed Ahmed Rana, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment, and Tribal Affairs; senior officials including Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo; Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor Mandeep K Bhandari; Commissioner Secretary Forest, Ecology and Environment Sheetal Nanda; and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Sarvesh Rai, along with legislators, conservationists, environmentalists, Army representatives and members of non-governmental organisations.

The Board also reviewed ongoing initiatives aimed at the conservation and protection of wildlife across Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
