SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir reported 11,950 tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2025, according to figures submitted in the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The cases were notified under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, part of India’s National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), aimed at eliminating TB through early detection, free treatment, and nutritional support for patients.

Under the programme, the Union Territory has received Rs 8.85 crore in 2024-25, all of which was released and fully utilised for TB control activities, including free diagnostic services, drug provision, and patient support under the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana. For 2025-26, Jammu Kashmir has been allocated Rs 16.05 crore, covering both programme implementation and nutritional support for TB patients.

The Ministry highlighted nationwide progress under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, with India reporting 187 TB cases per lakh population in 2024, marking a 21 percent decline in annual TB incidence since 2015. Key interventions include mobile diagnostic units, decentralised TB screening through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), private sector engagement for case notification, and intensive community awareness campaigns.

Despite sustained interventions, India has yet to achieve the aspirational target of fewer than one TB case per million population by 2025, underscoring the ongoing public health challenge.
