SRINAGAR: Police in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir have reunited a mentally unwell woman from Uttar Pradesh with her family after a gap of eleven years, Daily Excelsior reported.

The woman, identified as Leelawati and a resident of the Dwaj area of Uttar Pradesh, had gone missing over a decade ago and was later found living in the Surankote area of Poonch district, according to Daily Excelsior.

Officials told Daily Excelsior that, acting on the limited information provided by the woman, the Police Station Surankote team, led by SHO Syed Abid Bukhari, made sustained efforts to establish her identity. By analysing available clues and pursuing various leads, the police eventually succeeded in tracing her family and establishing contact with them.

The SHO said that police in Uttar Pradesh were also contacted and extended cooperation in completing the process, which facilitated the reunion. Upon receiving information about her whereabouts, the woman’s family travelled to Surankote.

After completing the required legal formalities, the woman was formally handed over to her family members.
