Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC) has announced the resumption of Phase-I operations of the Gulmarg Gondola after successfully completing extensive safety and load-bearing trials.

Officials confirmed that the checks on cable strength, cabin functionality, and passenger load capacity were concluded smoothly, clearing the way for enhanced operations. “Routine commercial rides on Phase-I will restart from tomorrow with increased carrying capacity,” the Corporation said in a statement.

The Gulmarg Gondola, among Asia’s highest and longest cable car projects, remains one of Kashmir’s most iconic tourist attractions. Phase-I ferries passengers from Gulmarg to Kongdori, offering sweeping views of the Pir Panjal range.

With improved capacity, officials expect shorter wait times and smoother management of peak-season crowds. “The move will ease congestion on weekends and holidays, allowing more visitors to enjoy the ride without long delays,” the statement reads.

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the development, calling it a timely boost for Gulmarg’s hospitality sector ahead of the autumn and winter rush. “The Gondola is central to Kashmir’s tourism appeal. Restarting after thorough safety checks will reassure visitors and revive business activity,” said a hotelier in Tangmarg.

The Gondola operates in two phases, Phase-I from Gulmarg to Kongdori at 3,050 metres, and Phase-II from Kongdori to Apharwat near 4,000 metres, making it one of the world’s most sought-after cable car experiences.

Tourism officials say the resumption comes at the right time, with Gulmarg’s autumn landscapes already drawing visitors. With the renewed operations, the Gondola is once again set to remain the crown jewel of Kashmir’s tourism industry.
