SRINAGAR: Several higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall on Wednesday, while widespread rain lashed the plains, including Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar, bringing down temperatures across the region.
Snowfall was reported from Pir Ki Gali along the Mughal Road in Shopian district, as well as from Sonamarg, Doodpathri and several tourist resorts. Most mountainous areas in the Valley remain snow-covered, with intermittent snowfall continuing since Sunday.
The plains, including Srinagar, witnessed persistent rainfall throughout the day, contributing to a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures.
Officials said the prevailing weather conditions have led to colder days and relatively warmer nights due to cloud cover, ending a spell of unusually high temperatures observed in recent weeks.
The Meteorological Department has forecast unsettled weather conditions until 20 March, with intermittent light to moderate rain or snowfall expected across many areas. Some higher reaches in the Chenab Valley and south Kashmir may receive moderate to heavy snowfall.
Another spell of wet weather is likely between March 26 and 28, with light precipitation expected at scattered locations in higher altitudes.
The weather office has also warned of possible thunderstorms, gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, and isolated hailstorms until March 20. Farmers have been advised to suspend agricultural activities during this period.
