SRINAGAR: Two residential houses were damaged after a fire broke out in Manchatir area of Chowkibal in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said, adding that timely intervention by Fire and Emergency Services prevented the blaze from spreading further.

According to officials, a fire call was received at the District Fire and Emergency Control Room, Kupwara, at around 8:20 pm, following which fire tenders from Chowkibal and Kralpora were rushed to the spot.

However, firefighting operations were hampered as the fire tenders were forced to halt nearly half a kilometre away from the site due to road blockages caused by heavy snowfall that had continued since Saturday, resulting in a delay in reaching the affected houses.

Despite the difficult terrain and weather conditions, fire personnel laid more than 30 water hoses to combat the flames. Officials said the deployment of multiple hoses led to reduced water pressure, further complicating the operation.

Nevertheless, firefighters managed to bring the fire under control, preventing further damage to nearby structures. The operation was carried out under the supervision of the in-charges of Fire and Emergency Services Chowkibal and Kralpora.

Cooling operations were underway at the site, while officials said the exact cause of the fire would be determined after a detailed investigation.
