SRINAGAR: Hundreds of people were seen bathing in the Wayil Canal, Ganderbal, on Sunday, violating the government-imposed ban on swimming in the canal.
The district administration had earlier issued an order banning bathing in the canal, citing the risk of drowning. People, many of them youth and children, continue to use the canal as a bathing spot, especially during hot afternoons, as summer vacations are currently underway in educational institutions across Kashmir.
Local residents have expressed serious concern over the growing number of people gathering at the canal banks. “Every day, hundreds of young individuals jump into the water, ignoring the danger. We’ve seen accidents here before, but still, no one seems to take it seriously,” said Sajid Ahmad, a resident of the Wayil area.
Authorities are now considering stricter measures, including increased patrolling, to deter people from violating the order.
“We are trying to enforce the ban, but the stretch is long and manpower is limited,” Syed Faheem Bihaki, ADC Ganderbal, said.
