DC Kupwara Directs Strict Action Against Illegal Dumping, Orders Protection of Water Bodies – Alfaaz – The Words

Kupwara: Deputy Commissioner, Kupwara, Shrikant Balasaheb Suse has issued an order directing immediate and sustained action to stop illegal dumping of garbage and sewage into water bodies across the district.

The directive, a copy of which lies with Alfaaz – The Words, follows representations raised during a public hearing held on December 13, 2025, where residents highlighted large-scale contamination of streams, nallahs and other water sources, particularly in Lolab Valley. The unchecked disposal of waste, the order says, has reportedly resulted in water pollution, scarcity and increased risk of water-borne diseases.

Taking serious note of the issue, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized that maintaining the cleanliness of water bodies is vital for public health, ecological balance and sustainable water management. He directed all concerned departments to initiate immediate action against illegal drainages and dumping sites and to ensure proper garbage and sewage disposal systems.

As per the order, Block Level and Municipal Level committees have been constituted comprising officers from Revenue, Rural Development, Urban Local Bodies, Police and engineering wings. These committees have been tasked with identifying illegal dumping points, removing unauthorized drainages, conducting cleanliness drives and taking punitive action against violators.

The Deputy Commissioner has also instructed officials to issue strict warnings, impose fines on repeat offenders and ensure close monitoring of vulnerable areas. All departments have been directed to submit weekly action-taken reports supported with geo-tagged photographs.
