
SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday directed authorities to ensure the timely completion of the under-construction Extension Block at Government Lalla Ded Hospital, stressing strict adherence to quality standards and faster execution.
The project, being developed as a dedicated Infertility and Gynaecological Oncology Centre, is aimed at strengthening specialised maternal and neonatal healthcare services in Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Minister said the facility would significantly upgrade healthcare infrastructure and provide advanced, accessible care for women and newborns across the Union Territory.
During his visit, Abdullah reviewed the pace of construction, execution strategy and infrastructure development, and called for close coordination among all departments, particularly the Health Department, to ensure uninterrupted funding, timely approvals and smooth operationalisation.
Officials informed that the project is being executed under the World Bank-funded Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project at an estimated cost of Rs 118.22 crore. The facility is designed as a G+5+attic structure with a built-up area of around 11,640 square metres and will have 117 specialised beds, including 65 for adults and 52 for infants.
The centre will feature modern infrastructure, including modular operation theatres, ICU, HDU, NICU, Labour, Delivery and Recovery suites, IVF laboratories and advanced fetal intervention facilities in line with national and international standards.
The building is being constructed using advanced base isolation technology with 43 friction pendulum isolators to ensure seismic safety in Zone-V. Officials said the foundation and ground floor structure have been completed, installation of base isolators is at an advanced stage, and structural works are progressing across multiple zones. Procurement of major medical equipment and mechanical and electrical systems has also been initiated.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, Principal and Dean GMC Srinagar Dr (Prof) Iffat Hassan, Administrator GMC Srinagar Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Medical Superintendent LD Hospital and senior officials from PWD (R and B) and JKERA.
