Jammu: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his capacity as Chairman of the J&K Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), on Monday approved the release of ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfer to beneficiaries enrolled under the Board’s welfare schemes.

Officials said the funds have been placed at the disposal of all Assistant Labour Commissioners for immediate, account-to-account disbursement among registered construction workers.

The sanctioned assistance covers multiple flagship schemes, including financial support for education, disability aid, chronic illness assistance, marriage support, next-of-kin relief, and merit awards for the children of registered workers.

Referring to the decisions taken during the Board’s 22nd meeting in July, the Chief Minister reiterated the importance of adopting a more inclusive definition of “construction worker” to ensure wider coverage of vulnerable labourers operating in the unorganised sector.

He also underscored the need to explore innovative policy tools that broaden welfare outreach, enhance financial security for workers, and bring the Board’s framework closer to national best practices in labour protection.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to safeguarding worker rights and dignity, Omar Abdullah said that construction labourers form the backbone of developmental activity and must receive timely and comprehensive welfare support.
