
SRINAGAR: The Project Approval Board (PAB) of the PM SHRI – Schools for Rising India scheme has approved an outlay of Rs 243 crore for Jammu and Kashmir for the financial year 2026–27.
The approval was granted during a meeting chaired by Union Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Sanjay Kumar, which was attended by Commissioner Secretary School Education, Ram Niwas Sharma, along with senior officials of Samagra Shiksha JK.
During the meeting, the Board reviewed financial and physical progress under the scheme for the previous year. Officials informed that out of Rs 200.11 crore available for 2025–26, an amount of Rs 194.53 crore was utilized and released to executing agencies, including the Public Works Department (R and B), primarily for civil works and related activities.
The Board noted improvements in academic performance, including a 10 percent increase in results in board examinations at the secondary and higher secondary levels. It also reviewed overall implementation progress under the scheme in the Union Territory.
The Ministry of Education assured continued support for implementation of approved plans. At present, the PM SHRI scheme is being implemented in 396 schools across Jammu and Kashmir, largely at the high and higher secondary levels.
Officials stated that reports in some sections of the media regarding low expenditure under the scheme are not accurate.
