SRINAGAR: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a Head Constable posted in Srinagar district after he was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a complainant.

An official said that the ACB received a written complaint alleging that Head Constable Parvaiz Ahmad Rather (EXK No. 992204), posted in District Srinagar, had demanded Rs 15,000 for removing the complainant’s name from the list of accused in case FIR No. 09/2026 registered at Police Station Soura, Srinagar.

During discreet verification conducted by a designated ACB officer, the accused public servant initially demanded Rs 50,000, which was later settled at Rs 15,000, the official said.

Following the complaint and verification findings, an offence under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 was found prima facie established against the accused. Accordingly, FIR No. 08/2026 was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar on May 1, 2026, and investigation was initiated.

A trap team was subsequently constituted, and the Head Constable was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe—Rs 5,000 in cash and Rs 10,000 through a cheque—near the District Police Lines, Srinagar. The amount was recovered on the spot, the official added.

Further investigation is underway. (KNS)
