SRINAGAR: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Doda, Mehraj Malik, was released on Tuesday morning after the High Court of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh quashed his detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Malik was lodged in Kathua District Jail following his detention in September 2025.

The High Court had set aside the PSA order on Monday after hearing a habeas corpus petition challenging his preventive detention. The case had been under consideration for several hearings, with the court reserving its judgment on February 23 after completing arguments from both sides.

According to officials, Malik was formally released on Tuesday morning after completion of legal formalities. Sources said his release stands unless he is required in any other case.

Mehraj Malik, who also heads the AAP’s Jammu Kashmir unit, was detained on September 8, 2025, over allegations of activities considered prejudicial to public order. Authorities in Doda had cited claims of “continued unlawful conduct” and inflammatory remarks, including tensions linked to protests over the relocation of a health centre and disputes with the local administration.
