SRINAGAR: In a crackdown on harassment at tourist destinations, Jammu and Kashmir Police in Ganderbal have detained members of a local group known as the “Self-Made Gang (16/96)” for allegedly intimidating and blackmailing tourists and visiting couples.
According to police, the group, comprising 20 individuals, frequently visited public places such as Abdullah Park, Dumping Park, and nearby riverfront areas. They were reportedly involved in photographing and filming couples and tourists without consent and later resorted to intimidation and harassment for personal gains.
Investigations revealed that the group maintained WhatsApp and other social media networks to coordinate their unlawful activities. Acting swiftly, police teams identified and apprehended all members of the group. Their parents and guardians were called to Police Station Ganderbal for counselling sessions to discourage such conduct in the future.
However, police said some habitual offenders, found repeatedly involved in similar acts, have been booked under relevant legal provisions and lodged in Dignibal Jail.
To ensure public safety, Ganderbal Police have also issued dedicated helpline numbers — Women’s Helpline: 9541786742, PCR Ganderbal: 9906668731 and 01942416564 — for reporting incidents of harassment or suspicious behaviour.
