Handwara: In a sustained effort to promote road safety and responsible driving, the Villgam Police under Handwara Police on Wednesday organised a Traffic Awareness Programme at Main Chowk Tarathpora Ramhall, in collaboration with the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Tarathpora.
The programme, led by Sub-Inspector Irfan Yaqoob along with officers from the Villgam Police Station, witnessed active participation from students, teachers, and local residents. The event aimed to sensitise the public—particularly the youth—about the importance of adhering to traffic norms and ensuring safety on the roads.
During the session, participants were briefed on the significance of wearing helmets, using seat belts, avoiding overloading, and following traffic signals. Officers highlighted that road safety is a collective responsibility and that disciplined driving not only ensures one’s own safety but also protects the lives of others.
As part of the drive, police personnel conducted on-the-spot vehicle inspections, challaning violators for offences such as driving without helmets or valid licenses, and overloading. Several vehicles found breaching safety regulations were seized on the spot.
Speaking to the media, Sub-Inspector Irfan Yaqoob cautioned against underage driving, stating, “Any minor found driving a vehicle will face strict legal action, and their parents will be held accountable. I urge parents not to hand over vehicles to their underage children.”
The programme also included interactive sessions on traffic signage, pedestrian safety, and responsible road behaviour, where students engaged actively with officers, reflecting growing community awareness about safe driving practices.
Reaffirming the department’s commitment to public safety, Handwara Police announced that similar awareness programmes will be organised across the subdivision to instil traffic discipline and prevent road mishaps.
At the conclusion, Sub-Inspector Irfan Yaqoob and Master Irshad Rashid jointly appealed for greater community participation and parental responsibility in cultivating a culture of safe and lawful road use.
