
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police in Handwara have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a social media user for allegedly spreading false and misleading information on social media platforms.
According to a police statement, the action followed a complaint received at Police Station Handwara, wherein it was alleged that a Facebook post uploaded by one Mohammad Yousuf contained fabricated and baseless claims aimed at maligning the reputation of an official setup and inciting public unrest in the area.
Taking cognizance of the matter, Police have registered FIR No. 232/2025 under Sections 353(1) and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Handwara, and further investigation set into motion.
Handwara Police have in the meantime urged social media users to exercise restraint and responsibility while using online platforms, advising them to refrain from posting, sharing, or circulating unverified or misleading content that may disturb public order or harm reputations. The police further warned that strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in spreading false information.
