Ramban, Aug 26: The water level in the Chenab River is flowing above the danger mark in Ramban district, causing concern among residents and district authorities. Heavy rains since last night have led to flash flooding and landslides at several places in Chenab valley of Jammu division.
Officials said the danger mark of the river Chenab at Julla Bridge , Maitra, Ramban is 23.30 meters, and at 12:15 AM the river was flowing exactly at 23.30 meters, posing a serious threat to nearby habitations.
Construction machinery belonging to a company building a bridge at Maitra Ramban was submerged after the Chenab swelled.
The district administration immediately launched an evacuation drive, shifting families living in low-lying areas along the riverbank in Maitra to safer locations.
Meanwhile, traffic movement on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway was suspended this morning after shooting stones blocked several locations of the NH 44.
