Jammu Kashmir Enacts Slective Power Cuts if Central Allocation Falls Short

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir temporarily reduces electricity demand by disconnecting power to certain areas or customers if unavailability of additional quantum under unallocated quantum from Ministry of Power (MoP).

According to the official documents available, authorities from Jammu and Kashmir has informed CERC that, “JK SLDC submitted that JK manages the shortage through Term Ahead Market (TAM), Day Ahead Market (DAM) and Real-Time Market (RTM) banking, Un-Requisitioned Surplus (URS) and additional quantum under unallocated quantum from MoP. If the power is not available they resort to load shedding.”

“JK SLDC and HPSLDC have submitted that they have acute shortage of manpower. Member (Technical), CERC advised them to take up the matter with the competent authorities,” it reads.

The documents further state that in the northern region, shortages for October-2024 was mostly declared by JK and Ladakh (UT) only.

In the meantime, another document revealed that “Ministry of Power has allocated 100 MW power as specific allocation from the UA pool of CGSs in Western Region to JK for the year around.”

“Keeping in view the change in the requirement of power of Northern States, UTs with the onset of summer season, it has been decided by the competent authority to revise the allocation of power to the States and UTs from unallocated quota of Central Sector Generating Stations (CGSs) of Northern Region, after accounting for specific allocation already made by Ministry of Power,” it reads.

The document further reveal that Ministry of Power has allocated 300 MW as specific allocation to State of Rajasthan from specific allocation to Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh from UA pool of NR from 01.04.2025 to 30.06.2025 and 179 MW from NTPC Dadri Stage-1 from 01.04.2025 to 30.06.2025 from the relinquished share of Delhi.

“Haryana, NDMC and Jammu and Kashmir has been allocated 393.94 MW, 196.97 MW and 393.94 MW respectively of power in the latest bidding process under B(v) of SHAKTT Policy for 5 years,” it reads. (KNO)
