Pahalgam Attack Marked a Shift in India’s Response to Terror: Army Chief

SRINAGAR: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday described the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians mostly tourists, as a pivotal moment in shaping India’s response to terrorism.

Speaking at a Kargil Vijay Diwas event in Drass, General Dwivedi said the military operation conducted on May 6–7 targeted several terrorist infrastructures across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The mission, he said, was carefully planned to avoid civilian casualties while delivering a strong message.

Following the operation, the Army maintained a high level of readiness from May 7 to 9, anticipating possible retaliation, he added. General Dwivedi further stated that the operation was part of a broader government strategy, involving coordinated efforts among various security agencies.

Highlighting the structural reforms within the armed forces, he announced the formation of integrated combat formations known as ‘Rudra’ brigades. These units combine infantry, armoured vehicles, artillery, special forces, and drone platforms, supported by unified logistics for joint operations. Two such brigades are already operational, reflecting a shift from traditional role-specific formations to more cohesive, multi-domain units aimed at enhancing operational readiness.

Furthermore, he introduced newly raised ‘Bhairav’ light commando battalions, specialized in executing swift strikes along the border. Each infantry unit includes drone sections, while artillery regiments are being equipped with remote strike systems for long-range engagements.

To counter aerial threats, the Army’s air defence systems are being upgraded with indigenously developed platforms. “All these changes, the Army Chief stated, are being implemented in close coordination with other branches of the military and government agencies,” he further added. (KNO)
