July 21, 2025 – A 25-year-old student preparing for the UPSC exam was found dead in his rented room in central Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar on Saturday evening. The police said it appears to be a case of suicide.

The deceased has been identified as Tarun Thakur, a resident of Jammu. He had been living in Delhi to prepare for the civil services exam and was staying in a rented accommodation commonly occupied by other aspirants.

According to the police, a distress call was received around 6:30 pm on Saturday, reporting a suspected suicide. A police team reached the location and found Tarun hanging from a ceiling fan with the help of a bedsheet. A suicide note was also found in the room, in which he stated that no one else was responsible for his death.

The incident came to light after Tarun’s father failed to reach him over the phone despite repeated attempts. Worried, he contacted the house owner. With the help of the neighbouring room’s balcony, the landlord managed to look inside Tarun’s room and saw him hanging. He then immediately informed the police.

The building where Tarun lived has seven single-room units, all occupied by UPSC aspirants.

Tarun’s mobile phone was found at the spot, and his brother, who lives in Gurugram, was informed. A police crime team also visited the scene for further investigation. Legal formalities are being completed, and an inquiry is underway to determine what led to the tragic incident.

Police have not ruled out any possibilities and said further details will be shared after the investigation progresses.
