
SRINAGAR: The Committee on Estimates of the JK Legislative Assembly reviewed the functioning of the Jal Shakti Department and progress on Water Supply Schemes (WSSs) across the Union Territory, with key figures showing 6,897 civil works allotted under 3,253 schemes. Of these, 6,887 works have been taken up and 3,596 completed as of May 31, 2025.
The meeting, chaired by Committee Chairperson Shamim Firdous at the Assembly Complex Srinagar, focused on safe drinking water supply, completion of ongoing WSS projects, and restoration of blocked springs and key water sources.
Senior officials, including Financial Commissioner Shaleen Kabra, JJM Mission Director Khurshid Ahmad Shah, and Chief Engineers from both Jammu and Kashmir divisions, were present.
The Committee stressed uninterrupted piped water supply in rural and urban areas, timely completion of Jal Jeevan Mission projects, and better coordination with the Public Works Department to avoid disruptions during civil works.
Legislator Salman Sagar, attending as a special invitee, urged for identification of water-deficient areas and called for special funding to address shortages.
The panel also emphasised strict fund monitoring, regular water quality testing, and prompt redressal of public grievances. It resolved to continue oversight of departmental performance and financial utilisation to ensure transparency and accountability.
