SRINAGAR: In the wake of the attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, a Parliamentary Committee is set to visit the site in Baisaran Valley to assess the on-ground situation and review the response of the security and administrative machinery.
According to The Statesman, this will be the first official visit by a Parliamentary panel to the terror-struck region since the incident. The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel, chaired by senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur, is currently on a broader national study tour with stops scheduled in Mumbai, Coorg, and Srinagar.
As part of the Kashmir leg of their tour, the committee will first arrive in Jammu, where they will hold preliminary meetings with senior administrative officials of the Union Territory. During their stay, the members are also scheduled to visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine before proceeding to Srinagar via the Vande Bharat Express.
In Srinagar, the committee is expected to hold further meetings focusing on regional development, internal security, and the growing impact of terrorism on the region’s civilian life and tourism sector.
Following their engagements in the capital, the committee will head to Pahalgam to visit the exact location of the attack in Baisaran Valley, where innocent victims were reportedly singled out and targeted after being asked their names—an act that has drawn widespread condemnation for its brutal and communal nature.
To ensure seamless coordination of the high-profile visit, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has appointed SP Rukwal, Director of Geology and Mining, as the official nodal officer.
