Srinagar, June 1: A mountaineer from Baramulla rescued an injured Himalayan Monal in the Sonamarg area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Sunday and later handed the bird over to the Wildlife Department for further care.

Sahil, a resident of Baramulla, said he was a mountaineer by profession.

Sahil said he spotted the rare and colourful bird during his visit to Sonamarg. Upon closer inspection, he found that the bird had sustained an injury to one of its legs and was unable to move properly.

Acting promptly, Sahil provided first aid to the injured bird before informing the concerned wildlife authorities.

“The bird was injured in one of its legs. After treating it, I safely handed it over to the Wildlife Department in Ganderbal so that it could receive proper medical attention and rehabilitation,” he said.

The Himalayan Monal is the national bird of Nepal and the state bird of Uttarakhand. Known for its striking iridescent plumage and ecological significance, the species inhabits the higher reaches of the Himalayas.
