SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday directed the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Union Territory administration to further intensify the crackdown on the narco-terror ecosystem operating across Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the need for a stronger anti-drug mechanism to curb the growing menace.
Chairing a high-level review meeting at Lok Bhavan here, the Lieutenant Governor assessed the progress of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan and instructed the Director General of Police to strengthen the Anti-Narcotics Task Force by deploying additional manpower to enhance enforcement and surveillance.
Reviewing measures for the rehabilitation of drug abuse victims, Sinha directed authorities to scale up the number of de-addiction and rehabilitation centres run by the police and health departments across the Union Territory. He also called for regular monitoring by health officials to ensure effective counselling and treatment of affected individuals.
The Lieutenant Governor further instructed officials to identify and monitor vulnerable locations, including abandoned buildings and river bunds, to prevent their misuse for narcotics-related activities. He also emphasised wider public disclosure of high-profile drug peddlers to act as a deterrent and to raise public awareness against drug-related crimes.
To address the issue at the grassroots level, Sinha tasked the School and Higher Education Departments with organising sports tournaments and youth engagement programmes aimed at steering young people away from substance abuse.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, senior administrative secretaries and other top officials.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), led by its president Javid Ahmad Tenga, called on the Lieutenant Governor and discussed issues related to the promotion of trade, tourism and other commercial sectors in the Union Territory. The delegation appreciated the administration’s sustained anti-drug campaign under the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir initiative.
