SRINAGAR: A two-day conclave at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), supported by Khyber Cement, has set in motion the preparation of Jammu Kashmir’s first dedicated policy framework to combat drug addiction. The university will draft the document based on the workshop’s outcomes and submit it to the government, aiming to address a longstanding policy gap amid a growing public health and social concern.
The workshop, titled “Drug-Free Society: Call for Collective Action,” was held on May 4 and 5 and organized by IUST’s Centre for Good Governance and Policy Analysis under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Shakil Ahmad Romshoo. It brought together policymakers, medical professionals, educators, law enforcement officials, youth representatives, civil society groups, and students for deliberations aligned with the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
GN Itoo, Director of the Centre for Good Governance and Policy Analysis, joined senior administrators and regional stakeholders in steering discussions focused on prevention, treatment, enforcement, education, and community engagement.
Participants noted that substance abuse in Jammu and Kashmir extends beyond healthcare, impacting families, educational institutions, and workplaces. The absence of a dedicated policy has been cited as a key limitation in coordinating an effective response.
Speaking on the initiative, Umar Tramboo, Director, Corporate and Strategy at Khyber Cement, said the company’s support reflects a broader commitment to societal well-being. “Our responsibility extends beyond building infrastructure. Supporting IUST in this initiative aligns with our values and contributes to a roadmap that can guide policy action,” he said.
Wasim Ahmed Khan, Chief, Sales and Customer Relations at the company, said collaborative efforts are essential to address substance abuse. “By working with academic institutions and community stakeholders, we aim to support awareness and create an environment where youth can thrive free from addiction,” he said.
Officials said the forthcoming framework is expected to provide actionable recommendations and serve as a reference point for sustained, coordinated intervention by the administration.
Khyber Cement’s involvement in the conclave forms part of its broader engagement in the region, including initiatives in education, healthcare, youth development, and sports. The company said its participation in the anti-drug initiative reflects an ongoing commitment to community-oriented development in Jammu Kashmir.
