Baramulla, Apr 29: Once a favoured recreational destination in north Kashmir’s Baramulla town, Gulnar Park is now facing criticism from visitors over neglect and deteriorating infrastructure, with damaged play equipment raising safety concerns for children.
The park, which features play structures for children, has seen most of its equipment fall into disrepair.
Broken and worn-out installations have raised safety concerns, with locals warning that continued use could lead to injuries.
Muhammad Asif, a resident, while lashing at the concerned authority responsible for its maintenance, said, “For the children of the town, it is a main attraction. The play structure is what they are looking for. But, unfortunately, the worn-out slides and other equipment are extremely dangerous for the children. The authorities need to ensure that the play structure is well-maintained.”
The park was initially developed by Jammu and Kashmir Bank under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
However, it was later taken over by the Department of Floriculture, Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite its deteriorating condition, visitors are being charged an entry fee of Rs 50 per person.
Locals said that for a family of five, the total cost of Rs 250 is on the higher side, especially given the lack of basic upkeep.
“Authorities are collecting a substantial amount daily, particularly during peak summer when hundreds of visitors, including students from across the district, throng the park. The question is, where is this money going?” a local visitor said.
The park continues to witness heavy footfall during the summer months, with families and students frequenting it for leisure.
However, the declining condition of facilities has left many disappointed.
Locals have now appealed to the authorities to urgently address the issue, repair damaged equipment, and ensure proper maintenance so that the park remains a safe and enjoyable space for the public.
