
SRINAGAR: A study group of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy on Monday met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during its visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the power sector and assess ongoing infrastructure and reform initiatives.
During the interaction, the delegation apprised the Chief Minister of the objectives of their visit and held detailed deliberations on key issues concerning the energy sector, including power generation, distribution systems, and infrastructure strengthening across the Union Territory.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to improving energy infrastructure, enhancing power reliability, and accelerating reforms to meet the rising electricity demand in Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the need for sustained investment in the sector to ensure uninterrupted and affordable power supply to all sections of society.
Members of the study group raised key issues related to strengthening transmission and distribution networks, tapping renewable energy potential, and improving overall efficiency in the power supply system.
The Chief Minister also underscored Jammu and Kashmir’s vast hydroelectric potential and reiterated the government’s focus on promoting clean and renewable energy initiatives to achieve long-term sustainability.
Both sides discussed various challenges faced by the sector, with the Chief Minister assuring full cooperation from the Jammu and Kashmir Government in facilitating the Committee’s work and implementing recommendations aimed at sectoral improvement.
The visit is part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy, which examines matters related to the Ministry of Power and allied sectors.
Pirzada Farooq Ahmed Shah, MLA Gulmarg, was also present during the meeting.
