SRINAGAR: As many as 64 private member bills have been listed for introduction in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday according to the official list of business issued by the Assembly Secretariat.
The bills are scheduled to be taken up in the House during the day’s proceedings, subject to the smooth conduct of business.
Among them, attention is centered on a bill moved by National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq, placed at serial number four, which seeks renewal of leases for existing leaseholders. The bill will be considered for introduction if time permits during the session.
While several private member bills are likely to face opposition from the government or may be withdrawn by sponsoring members, the government’s response to Sadiq’s proposal is expected to draw particular scrutiny, especially against the backdrop of expiring leases held by hoteliers in Gulmarg.
The bill is seen as an attempt to address provisions under the Jammu and Kashmir Land Grants Rules, 2022, notified by the LG-led administration.
Under the 2022 rules, leases—except certain specified residential and already subsisting categories—are not eligible for renewal and are to be treated as terminated upon expiry. Such properties are required to be put to fresh auction, as per the rules governing land grants in the Union Territory.
