SRINAGAR: The Government of India is examining proposals for Metrolite and Light Metro projects aimed at improving urban transport infrastructure in Jammu and Srinagar.

This information was shared by Education Minister Sakeena Itoo in the Legislative Assembly while responding to a question raised by MLA Mohan Lal on behalf of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The Minister said that in Jammu, detailed ground surveys, traffic studies, feasibility assessments, and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) have been completed by M/s RITES Limited. The DPR includes alignment planning, ridership projections of around 2.84 lakh daily passengers by 2035, cost estimates, land requirements of 29.58 hectares for permanent use and 1.50 hectares temporarily, along with environmental, seismic, and financial analysis. The project’s Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) has been assessed at 18.92 percent.

She added that the proposed corridor in Jammu currently covers a 23-km stretch from Bantalab to Bari Brahmana, with 22 stations. There is presently no proposal to extend the corridor to Akhnoor, and any future expansion would require separate feasibility studies and approval from the Government of India.

Regarding Srinagar, the Minister informed that similar technical studies, including topographical surveys, traffic and ridership analysis, engineering feasibility, and financial assessments, have been completed by M/s RITES Ltd. The DPRs for both cities have been finalized and submitted to the Government of India for appraisal.
