SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday flagged off and participated in the first-ever international marathon held in Jammu, marking a significant initiative to promote sports culture and tourism in the region.

The marathon commenced from Maulana Azad Stadium and saw enthusiastic participation from athletes, fitness enthusiasts, international runners, and locals from across Jammu and Kashmir.

Noted personalities, including actor Milind Soman and actor Gul Panag, also took part in the event, adding prominence and encouraging wider public engagement.

Organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, the event is part of efforts to position Jammu as a destination for major sporting and outdoor events.

Participants praised the initiative, with international runners noting that while the weather posed challenges, the event marked a strong beginning for future editions.

Locals also welcomed the marathon, stating that such events promote fitness, community engagement, and help boost tourism prospects in the region.

Sports Minister Satish Sharma said the government is focused on strengthening sports infrastructure and expanding large-scale sporting events across Jammu and Kashmir in the coming years.

He added that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, sustained efforts are underway to elevate sports standards and create better opportunities for youth in the Union Territory.

More than 3,500 runners, including around 800 from outside the region, taking part in the three categories of 5 km, 10 km and 21 km, officials said.
