Jammu, Mar 24: J&K BJP president and Member of Parliament Sat Sharma on Tuesday raised a serious concern in the Rajya Sabha in New Delhi regarding the alarming rise in bovine smuggling, terming it a grave challenge not only to law and order in Jammu and Kashmir but also to the social fabric and national security.

Raising the issue in the zero hour, Sat Sharma highlighted that the increasing incidents of bovine smuggling in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region, reached a critical stage. He emphasised that this illegal activity was no longer confined to petty criminals but evolved into a well-organised network of smugglers operating with sophisticated methods, including the use of illegal routes, forged permits and aggressive tactics to evade law enforcement agencies.

Citing official data from Jammu and Kashmir Police, Sat Sharma informed the House that during the year 2024 alone, under “Operation Kamdhenu,” a total of 425 bovine smugglers were arrested and 3,434 animals were rescued from their clutches. While appreciating the vigilance and efficiency of the Police forces, he noted that these figures simultaneously reflected the alarming scale at which this illegal trade was flourishing.

J&K BJP president further stated that the unchecked growth of such organised crime posed a serious threat to societal harmony and had the potential to impact national security. He stressed that the issue must not be viewed merely as a regional concern but as a matter of national importance requiring urgent attention.

Calling for decisive action, Sat Sharma urged the central government to undertake immediate, concrete, and multi-dimensional interventions to curb this menace. He strongly advocated for the strict implementation of a “zero tolerance” policy against bovine smuggling networks to dismantle the organised mafia involved in such activities.

Reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding law and order and preserving the social harmony of Jammu and Kashmir, Sat Sharma expressed confidence that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government would take firm and effective measures to address this growing challenge and ensure stringent action against those involved in this illegal trade.
