SRINAGAR: Political leaders from across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday condemned a firing incident at a marriage function in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu that was attended by National Conference president and five-time former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary.

The reactions followed the apprehension of a man after shots were fired at the venue where the leaders had attended the wedding. The incident reportedly occurred when Abdullah and Choudhary were leaving the function. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the firing was directed specifically at the leaders.

Soon after the incident, several political figures expressed concern and condemned the act through posts on the social media platform X.

Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi described the firing at a wedding attended by Abdullah and the Deputy Chief Minister as reprehensible.

He said the development was deeply troubling and emphasised that those responsible must face strict action in accordance with the law.

Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference president Sajad Lone also condemned the episode. In a post on X, he wrote:

“Condemn the cowardly firing at Dr Farooq sahib and Surinder Choudhary Ji and Nasir Aslam sahib. Thanks to Allah Almighty that they are safe.”

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Tariq Hamid Karra termed the incident shocking and expressed concern about the security environment in the region. In his post on X, he wrote:

“Strongly condemn the shocking firing incident on former CM Farooq Abdullah sb and other senior leaders reported in Jammu today. Such acts of violence are deeply disturbing and raise serious concerns about the prevailing security scenario in the region.

The increasing criminalisation and lawlessness cannot be ignored. Those entrusted with maintaining law and order must be held accountable. The people deserve safety, stability, and a secure environment, and it is the responsibility of the administration to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone.”

Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference general secretary Molvi Imran Ansari also raised concern over reports suggesting an attempt on Abdullah’s life. In his post on X, he wrote:

“Deeply concerned by reports of an attempt on Dr. Farooq Abdullah Sb’s life at a wedding in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu. Details remain sketchy at the moment, but it is a matter of serious concern.

Relieved to know that, Alhamdulillah, he is safe and has escaped unhurt. Wishing him continued safety and good health.”

Meanwhile, National Conference chief spokesperson and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq said he had spoken to the leaders after the incident. In a post on X, he wrote:

“I have spoken to Dr. Farooq Abdullah Sahab, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Ji, and Nasir Aslam Wani Sb.”

According to officials, Abdullah had been observing the Ramadan fast and had dinner with guests at the wedding function. As he was leaving the venue, the gunman allegedly opened fire, but the former chief minister was not injured.

Officials said the accused claimed to be the chairman of an organisation called “Jagran Manch”, which they described as previously unknown, and added that he appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the incident.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly told investigators that he had intended to kill Abdullah for nearly two decades and believed he had finally found an opportunity on Wednesday, though the attempt failed.
