SRINAGAR: Police in several districts of Kashmir on Friday issued advisories urging media organisations, journalists and social media users to exercise restraint and responsibility while reporting or sharing information in view of the prevailing situation.
In separate statements, police in Budgam, Srinagar and Kulgam asked the public to refrain from publishing or circulating unverified information, speculation or rumours on electronic and social media platforms. They emphasised that all information should be confirmed through credible and authoritative sources before dissemination.
The advisories said the circulation of rumours, misinformation or unverified content could create unnecessary panic, disturb public order and adversely affect peace and communal harmony.
Police also warned that online activities are being closely monitored and strict legal action would be taken against individuals or organisations found spreading misinformation under relevant provisions of law.
Authorities appealed to citizens to cooperate with the administration and act responsibly to help maintain peace, order and harmony across the districts.
