SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday told the Legislative Assembly that multiple road widening and upgradation projects in downtown Srinagar are at different stages of survey, approval and implementation to ease congestion and enhance road safety.
Responding to a query by Tanvir Sadiq, the Government said many major roads in the old city were built decades ago with limited right of way and are now under severe pressure due to rapid urbanisation and expanding commercial activity. It added that routine maintenance and repair works are being undertaken periodically to maintain traffic flow and safety.
On specific projects, the Government stated that the Nowshera–Soura (KZP Road) corridor is part of an already approved widening programme. Structures near Nalabal Bridge have been acquired, while acquisition of the remaining properties will proceed after settlement and disposal of pending court cases.
For the Saida Kadal to Ashajipora (SMS Road) stretch, a survey for widening approximately 1.75 kilometres is underway. The proposal aims to expand the carriageway from 7.5 metres to 21 metres, with a Detailed Project Report to be submitted after completion of survey and feasibility processes.
It further said a preliminary project report for widening and upgrading the Devi Angan–Hawal Road has been prepared under the CRIF scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 31.25 crore, including expenses for land acquisition and utility relocation. The project will proceed subject to approval and funding availability.
The Government also informed the House that the Alamgiri Bazar Chowk project has been approved under the UT Sector 2025–26 plan at a cost of Rs 335 lakh, involving acquisition of five structures and redesign of the junction, with the DPR currently under process. Similarly, redesigning of Mirza Kamil Sahib Chowk has been approved under UT Sector 2025–26 at Rs 135 lakh, with the DPR awaiting necessary sanctions.
Emphasising that it is aware of persistent congestion in downtown Srinagar, the Government said infrastructure improvements are being implemented in phases based on traffic volume, public safety priorities and financial feasibility, with particular focus on ensuring smooth movement of emergency services.
