SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday said there is presently no proposal for upgradation of schools to the next higher level in Khansahib constituency.

Replying to a question in the Legislative Assembly tabled by MLA Khansahib Saif-ud-Din Bhat regarding upgradation of schools, the government said Khansahib constituency is economically backward, with a predominantly scattered population comprising tribals, Paharis, and Gujjars.

Regarding students from the Kichwari belt, the government said a Higher Secondary School at Dragger is functioning at a distance of about 3.25 kilometres. The area is also served by one high school, three middle schools, and seven primary schools, catering to approximately 825 students.

On issues raised about students from Poskar, Falchil, and Rawalpora, the government said the availability of nearby secondary and higher secondary institutions has facilitated continued access to education. It added that High School Falchil caters to 72 students from classes 6th to 10th, while the nearest higher secondary school for Rawalpora is HSS Hardpanzo, located about 4 kilometres away.

The upgradation of schools requires fulfilment of laid-down norms, including feasibility, distance criteria, and enrollment strength, and feasible schools will be examined when proposals are received, it added.

Regarding the creation of a separate Education Zone at Parnewa, Arigam, and Waterhail, the government said it is not presently contemplating reorganisation of education zones. However, it added, the issue may be examined in light of eligibility criteria and feasibility norms, subject to financial implications and concurrence of the Finance Department. (KNO)
