SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday inaugurated GON’GUL-2026, the 11th AgriTech Mela, at the Shalimar Campus of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, underscoring the need for modern, market-linked agriculture to boost productivity and farmers’ incomes in Jammu and Kashmir.
The three-day event, themed “NextGen Agriculture: My Produce–My Price,” features more than 100 stalls by agri-entrepreneurs and start-ups showcasing innovations in cultivation, irrigation and value addition. The Chief Minister inspected the exhibits and interacted with stall holders regarding their produce, enterprises and technological interventions.
Addressing the inaugural session, Abdullah said progressive farmers, scientists and researchers have played a significant role in transforming the region’s agrarian landscape. He emphasised that to compete globally, Jammu and Kashmir must improve both the quality and quantity of its agricultural produce.
Highlighting the role of agricultural universities, he said research, innovation and field outreach have strengthened local farming systems and supported growers. He stressed the importance of adopting modern practices, value addition, branding and stronger market linkages to ensure better returns.
Abdullah said initiatives such as GON’GUL provide a platform for farmers to engage with experts, explore new technologies and access emerging market opportunities, thereby strengthening the agricultural ecosystem. He also commended student-led innovations in farming and irrigation displayed at the mela.
Ministers Sakina Itoo and Javaid Ahmad Dar, Vice Chancellor Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, senior officials, faculty members, scientists and a large number of farmers and agri-entrepreneurs attended the inaugural session. The mela is expected to draw wide participation from farmers, start-ups, researchers and students over the next three days.
