SRINAGAR: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir of the Crime Branch, Jammu and Kashmir, has filed a chargesheet against two accused in a prize money fraud case involving alleged cheating of a complainant on the pretext of a Rs 2.35 crore lottery win.

The chargesheet in FIR No. 24/2017, registered under Section 420 of the Ranbir Penal Code read with Section 66(d) of the Information Technology Act, has been presented before the Court of City Munsif (JMIC), Srinagar.

According to investigators, the case was registered after a complaint alleging that the victim was contacted through a fraudulent phone call claiming he had won Rs 2.35 crore and a car from a firm described as M/s Chevrolet Motors Promotion Limited, UK. The caller persuaded the complainant to correspond through an email address and asked him to deposit money towards customs duty in a bank account.

During the investigation, it was found that the complainant transferred money to an account held in the name of Jitu Raj Johari at the State Bank of India, Sarai Khawja branch. He was later instructed through emails to open an account with the Royal Bank of Scotland and deposit further amounts as Charges of Transfer through an agency. Despite making the payments, the complainant did not receive any prize money.

The probe identified Jitu Raj Johari of Faridabad, Haryana, and Suresh Thakur of Delhi as the accused involved in the offence. Investigators said the accused, using false identities and email addresses, continued to mislead the complainant and fraudulently obtained large sums of money.

The Crime Branch said the involvement of the accused was established through oral, documentary and corroborative evidence collected during the investigation. The chargesheet has now been submitted for judicial proceedings.
