
Baramulla, Jan 24: Amid a vast improvement in weather, a day after heavy snowfall was recorded in Baramulla district on Friday, essential services including power and water supply in several parts of the district were partially restored on Saturday.
The prolonged power outage had added to the hardships of the residents. However, an official of the Power Development Department, Baramulla said that work was underway to restore the power supply.
“The field staff is working round the clock and we are hopeful that electricity will be restored by evening across the affected areas, ” said Muhammad Shafi Khan, Executive Engineer, PDD Baramulla. The heavy snowfall has caused extensive damage to the PDD infrastructure. Officials said that a 132 KV transmission tower at Kanispora was severely damaged, cutting off electricity to major parts of the district. In addition, several 33 KV, 11 KV and LT lines were damaged due to heavy snow load and falling trees. Baramulla district received heavy snowfall, with around one foot of snow recorded in the plains, while more than two feet accumulated in the Kandi and higher reaches of the district. Meanwhile, several areas, especially in Uri and upper belt of Rafiabad, remained partially cut off on Saturday due to slippery road conditions and snow-covered stretches.
