SRINAGAR: The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered a case against a man for allegedly duping two individuals by issuing fake appointment letters in the name of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, officials said on Saturday.

According to officials, the accused has been identified as Mohd Tahir of Banola in Poonch district. He is alleged to have lured the victims with false promises of employment in the High Court and collected substantial sums of money from them. The case was registered after a preliminary verification found the allegations to be prima facie true.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch Jammu, Sanjay Parihar, said the first complainant came into contact with the accused during a train journey from Jammu to Roorkee. The acquaintance later developed into familiarity, which the accused allegedly exploited by assuring the complainant of a job in the High Court. Trusting the promise, the victim reportedly paid Rs 2 lakh and was handed an appointment letter, which was later found to be forged.

In a separate case, the accused allegedly cheated another complainant who had known him for a long time. Police said the accused initially took Rs 2 lakh on the pretext of his wife’s medical treatment. He later allegedly promised to secure a High Court job for the complainant’s son, collected necessary documents and issued a fake appointment order.

Officials said both complainants approached the concerned authorities to verify the appointment letters, which were subsequently found to be fake.

Following verification, a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation has been initiated to ascertain the full extent of the scam.
