SRINAGAR: The National Medical Commission has revoked the recognition of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu, withdrawing permission to run the MBBS course with immediate effect after detecting serious violations of minimum standards prescribed under the 2023 regulations.
The development was confirmed by BJP MLA RS Pathania, who said in a post on X that the NMC had cancelled approval for 50 MBBS seats after the institution failed to meet essential quality benchmarks. Emphasising “quality over quantity,” he said all affected students would be accommodated in recognised medical colleges of Jammu and Kashmir against supernumerary seats, ensuring their academic careers remain protected.
🔬 Quality Over Quantity:
NMC has revoked permission for 50 MBBS seats at SMVDIME due to a failure to meet essential standards.
It reaffirms commitment to Quality .
Every affected student will be seamlessly transferred to a Supernumerary Seat in other UT Colleges. @BJP4India— R. S. Pathania (@pathania_rs) January 6, 2026
The regulatory body has directed that current MBBS students enrolled at the institution be transferred to other recognised medical colleges.
The action comes amid a prolonged controversy surrounding the inaugural MBBS batch of the college, in which a majority of admitted students were Muslims. The issue had triggered protests by certain groups, who demanded that admissions be restricted to Hindu students, drawing sharp criticism from various quarters and raising concerns over the politicisation of medical education.
