Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the National Conference led government, describing its tenure as a period marked by deception, institutional decline, and failure of governance.

Addressing a press conference in Handwara, Lone said the government had come to power by misleading voters and claimed that 2025 stood exposed as a year of false promises. He alleged that the mandate was secured through misrepresentation and that the administration had failed to deliver on key electoral commitments.

Lone said promises such as free 200 units of electricity, 12 gas cylinders annually, and one lakh jobs had not materialised. He claimed residents in non metered areas faced a 50 percent hike in electricity tariffs. He alleged that employment generation had been replaced by outsourcing, which he termed an exploitation of the youth through private agencies.

He further alleged that governance had been reduced to routine transfers, while essential public services continued to deteriorate across the Union Territory.

Referring to Government Medical College Handwara, Lone accused the government of targeting the institution due to political reasons. He said the college was denied facilities extended to other medical colleges, including the installation of an MRI machine. He stated that the exclusion was linked to the constituency being represented by an opposition MLA. Lone said his party would explore CSR funding for critical facilities if the government continued to ignore the college.

Peoples Conference chief spokesperson Bashir Ahmed Dar also addressed the press conference and criticised the NC government’s performance over the past 15 months. He dismissed the publicity around the recent Rajya Sabha nomination as an attempt to divert attention from governance failures. He said a Rajya Sabha member had no role in district level development and alleged that constituency level issues remained unaddressed.

Lone also raised concerns over the reservation policy, claiming that a disproportionate share of reserved selections had gone to the Jammu region, leaving Kashmir with limited representation. He called for the restoration of district and divisional cadres to address the imbalance.

The PC president criticised the Chief Minister for remaining silent on alleged incidents of harassment faced by Kashmiris outside the Union Territory. He said the leadership failed to intervene at a time when people needed political support.

Concluding his remarks, Lone warned that public anger against the government was growing and alleged that the administration had become disconnected from ground realities. He said the Peoples Conference would continue to challenge what it termed the failures of the present government.
