Winter Games Association J&K holds AGM

Srinagar, Dec 29: The Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday held its Annual General Meeting along with an award ceremony in Srinagar to review its activities and honour athletes for their achievements in winter sports.

The meeting, as per a statement was attended by representatives of all affiliated units, district associations, and international athletes.

An award ceremony was also organised on the occasion, with MLA Gulmarg, Farooq Ahmad Shah, as the chief guest. During the ceremony, awards were given to Arif Khan, who was awarded Outstanding Skier of the Year, Zubair Ahmad Lone, who received the Outstanding Snowboarder of the Year award, Ghulam Hassan Lala, who was honoured with an award of appreciation, Abdul Rehman Dar, who was conferred with the Hall of Fame Award.

While addressing the members, Farooq Ahmad Shah highlighted the significant role played by senior members of the association, including Shabir Wani, Dar Sahib, Gul Mustafa, and others, in building and strengthening the Winter Games Association of J&K.

He recalled his tenure as Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, stating that he made sincere efforts to get the association formally registered, which was successfully achieved. He further emphasised that Gulmarg holds a premier position in winter sports across India and noted its historical importance as a skiing destination during the British era.

The MLA also said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is keen to develop Gulmarg into a world-class ski destination. Reaffirming his commitment, Farooq Ahmad Shah assured the association of his continued support, stating that he has been associated with WGAJK since its inception.

During the AGM, President WGAJK Rauf Tramboo briefed the members about the achievements of its athletes in training and participation in national and international skiing competitions and FIS races in the last few years. Tramboo thanked the J&K Sports Council, the tourism department, and all its members, officials, and athletes for their participation and continued support in promoting winter sports in Jammu & Kashmir.
