Ramban, Dec 22: The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) remained open for two-way traffic on Monday, bringing relief to commuters and transporters, while the Kishtwar–Sinthantop–Anantnag National Highway (NH-244) continued to remain closed for the second consecutive day due to heavy snowfall, traffic officials said.
Authorities stated that, subject to fair weather and favourable road conditions, light motor vehicles (LMVs), passenger vehicles, high passenger service vehicles (HPSVs), private cars and heavy vehicles carrying goods will continue to be allowed to ply from both sides of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway on Tuesday.
Earlier, light, medium and heavy motor vehicles were permitted to move in both directions throughout the day.
However, traffic movement remained slow at several locations due to single-lane road stretches and vehicle breakdowns. Slow traffic was reported at Balinalla, Dewal, Nashri–Dalwas and along the Marog–Kishtwari Pather stretch. The situation was further aggravated by the breakdown of two heavy vehicles on the highway.
Citing the Meteorological Department, traffic authorities said rainfall and snowfall are likely to continue over the next few days. In view of the forecast, commuters have been advised to plan their journeys cautiously and travel only after confirming the latest road conditions.
Passengers and drivers have been urged to check updates from the Traffic Control Units (TCUs) at Srinagar, Ramban and Jammu, as well as the official social media handles of the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police, before commencing their journey.
The authorities have advised passengers and LMV operators to prefer daytime travel and strictly avoid night journeys, especially on vulnerable stretches. Movement of heavy vehicles between the Nashri Tunnel and Navyug Tunnel during night hours has also been discouraged, as it may cause inconvenience and delays.
Emphasising road safety, traffic officials appealed to commuters to maintain proper lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could lead to congestion and pose serious safety risks.
The Traffic Department said it is closely monitoring the situation and will issue timely advisories to ensure the safety and smooth movement of vehicles along the highway.
