SRINAGAR: India has physically fenced more than 93 per cent of its international border with Pakistan, the Ministry of Home Affairs told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, underscoring border fencing as a key pillar of the country’s national security strategy.

In this picture taken on 4 December 2003, Indian soldiers patrol along a barbed-wire fence near Baras Post on the Line of Control (LoC) between Pakistan and India some 174 kms north west of Srinagar.

In a written reply to a question by Trinamool Congress Members of Parliament Jagdish Chandra Barma Basunia and Sharmila Sarkar, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said fencing has been completed along 2,135.136 kilometres of the 2,289.66 kilometre India Pakistan border, accounting for 93.25 per cent of the total stretch.

The remaining 154.524 kilometres, or 6.75 per cent of the border, is yet to be fenced, the ministry informed the House. The government cited difficult terrain and strategically sensitive areas as major challenges delaying completion along the unfenced stretches.

The Home Ministry said border fencing remains central to efforts aimed at preventing infiltration, curbing cross border smuggling and strengthening surveillance along the sensitive western frontier. According to the government, work on the remaining sections is underway.

The Centre said the completed fencing has already contributed to improved monitoring of border areas, reduced infiltration attempts and better detection of smuggling activities. It added that the Pakistan border remains a priority given persistent security concerns.

Providing a broader context, the ministry noted that India shares a land border of 15,106.7 kilometres and a coastline of 7,516.6 kilometres with seven neighbouring countries. While progress has also been made along borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, the focus on Pakistan reflects heightened security imperatives in the west.
