SRINAGAR: The Department of Fisheries has successfully raised genetically improved germplasm of Brown Trout imported from Denmark under controlled conditions, marking a significant advancement in fish conservation and aquaculture in Jammu Kashmir.
As part of the initiative, the department released 20,000 improved Brown Trout fingerlings into the upper reaches of the Sukhnag, Doodganga, and Shaliganga streams in Budgam district. The effort aims to enhance trout production, replenish native fish populations, and improve survival and growth rates in open trout waters across the Union Territory.
Officials said the move is also expected to give a major push to eco-tourism and recreational fishing (angling) in the region, as Brown Trout regarded as the “angler’s delight” continues to attract fishing enthusiasts from around the world.
The stocking process was carried out at Sukhnag, Doodpathri, Brenwar, and other suitable sites under the supervision of Joint Director Fisheries, Gh. Mohi-ud-din Wani, and SDM Khansahib, Jahangir Ahmad, in the presence of anglers, civil society members, and departmental officials.
Local residents lauded the department’s efforts to promote environment-friendly initiatives and safeguard aquatic biodiversity, praising the move as a step towards conserving the pristine fisheries resources of the district while strengthening Kashmir’s reputation as an “angler’s paradise.”
