With the five-year term of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh ending on November 1, the Union Territory administration, in consultation with the Union Home Ministry, is likely to transfer the Council’s powers to the Deputy Commissioner or a local officer. The move comes as elections have not been announced due to pending formalization of five new districts and implementation of 33% women’s reservation in Hill Councils. Officials said the Council’s term could either be extended by six months or its powers temporarily vested in the DC, given the prevailing unrest in Leh following the September 24 violence. A final decision is expected soon, as the Council—ruled by the BJP for two consecutive terms—nears the end of its tenure.
